American Conservatives Need To Wake Up
The politicization, discussion and solving of mass shootings and terrorism need to take place.
For the last few years, mass shootings and terrorist attacks involving the use of guns have become more common in the United States of America. Every time a horrific event like these take place, the usual thread is that people offer their thoughts and prayers; we hear the comments made by various politicians and analysts, and then nothing is done. However, during the aftermath of recent shootings, there has been an urgent call for gun control to be discussed and implemented. Despite this, many conservative and right wing individuals ignore this call and would rather allow people to access guns extremely easily then potentially protect people from another mass shooting.
The call for gun control is a just and arguably correct approach to solving the mass shooting crisis in the USA. The argument is a simple one: placing restrictions, procedures and requirements to owning and using a gun will save the lives of many individuals. Many of these terrorists can obtain a gun so easily which is the problem. Although conservatives argue that it is anyone’s right to obtain guns easily because it is included in the Constitution, it is important to note that with every right comes responsibilities and certain limitations. One should have the freedom to choose and to obtain a firearm. However, that freedom must be limited if it is going to dehumanise and violate other individuals’ rights and freedoms. Also, it is concerning that people are not requested to answer proper questions when it comes to obtaining guns in certain states, or even go through a psycho-analysis to determine their mental state. Thus, it seems obvious that implementing gun control would be beneficial on a legal, practical and moral basis.
In addition to the debates regarding terrorism and mass shootings, conservatives tend to use stereotypes and prejudices in deciding when it is important to politicise the events or not. When it comes to people of colour being the shooter(s), the conservatives immediately discuss implementing immigration bans, and they use racial slurs or connotations by labeling the individual as a terrorist. However, when a white person is the shooter, conservatives try to defend the individual by blaming a mental illness or they refuse to label the white person as a terrorist. When individuals attempt to speak out after a mass shooting or terrorist attack by either discussing gun control or labeling the white shooter as a terrorist, the white conservatives immediately lash out and call the person a “non-caring”, hateful individual.
The truth of the matter is that conservatives only enjoy racialising events and speaking out against events when it is beneficial to them or it is within their ideological perspective. Many white conservatives feel uncomfortable discussing race when a terrorist, who is white, is involved and they prefer to ignore the situation altogether. It is time that the USA and its people end the debate and compel their political representatives to make legislative changes that will truly protect the people from future terrorist attacks and mass shootings. These laws must not be hateful or prejudicial such as proposed Republican and Trump ideas. Instead, they need to serve to protect the entire, inclusive American body so that every individual will feel safe when they live, work or visit the United States of America.
